There is a huge demand for robots and many applications. Nevertheless, Dominik Bösl, Vice President Consumer Driven Robotics at Kuka AG, opposes the blind use of robots. For computer scientists and engineers, there is still much to do in development.

Robots and humans work side by side in assembly

The name Cobot says it all: Robots should not only be next to, but also Working with people.

In Industry 4.0, man and machine are buddies. The robot is a sensitive colleague who will soon even notice when he gets human skin instead of a piece of steel. The focus of the automation and mechatronics trade fair in Munich is on how it all works.

At the “Automatica” trade fair in Munich, the world’s leading robotics and automation industry show, 800 exhibitors showcase the latest news on Industrie 4.0, the networked factory. The fair runs until June 24, 2016. (more…)

About 500 pedestrians die each year in German traffic. At least some of them could save the life of Bosch’s Dodge Assistant in the future. In the event of a collision hazard, the computer calculates an alternative route in an instant and supports the driver’s maneuver.

Bosch engineer Lutz Bürkle and his team have developed the assistance system designed specifically to protect pedestrians.

The street carnival has begun and with it rises the beer sales in the foolish strongholds on high summer level. To make sure that the golden barley juice always flows in streams, brewing technology is often used by Siemens behind the scenes: the Braumat.

In future, driverless robotic excavators will take over foundations on Japanese construction sites. Drones provide orientation data from the air. Behind this automation is Komatsu, the second largest construction equipment manufacturer in the world.

Komatsu automates its construction machinery: they are to be able to carry out construction work without driver assistance, based on a 3D model of the construction site. Data is provided by drones.

At the SPS IPC Drives in Nuremberg, which will start tomorrow, 1650 exhibitors from over 40 countries will be presenting automation trends: Siemens will be showing 60,000 expected visitors a digital one Simulation factory, Fraunhofer researchers an engineering platform for SMEs, the Vienna University of Technology a test bench for car couplings.

Siemens presents software that helps to plan production processes. This should save companies 40 percent of their time and money.

This world premiere is in Atlanta, Georgia: the vending machine that puts out a used car at the push of a button. The buyer only needs a number code, which he receives when buying online. He saves about 1500 US dollars, according to inventors.

The gate of the vending machine opens with a numerical code. You still have to pick up the keys and contract from the dealer. The inventors want to change that now.

With the help of the surface tension of water, tiny components can be separated and transported to the assembly station. Even dust grains could be sorted.

Micro gear in size comparison: Fraunhofer researchers have developed a machine called IPA.FluidSorting, with which even the smallest particles can be singulated and floated to the assembly site.

Ironically, the rather unpopular jellyfish have developed one of the most efficient drives in the animal kingdom – the recoil drive. This makes the cnidarians three and a half times as effective as the fast salmon.

Jellyfish are among the most efficient floats in the sea

The automation specialist Festo already had the first artificial ones in 2008 Jellyfish developed and constantly improved. The latest version of the Aquajellies can even organize themselves in the water and communicate with each other. They even make swarms (more…)
